Ezekiel

Old Testament

Overview

Ezekiel records the prophetic ministry of a priest-turned-prophet among the Babylonian exiles, combining spectacular visions, symbolic actions, and detailed oracles into one of the most complex books of the Old Testament. Its forty-eight chapters divide into three sections: judgment on Judah (1-24), judgment on the nations (25-32), and restoration and hope (33-48).

The book opens with Ezekiel's overwhelming vision of God's glory—the living creatures, the wheels within wheels, and the throne above the firmament. This vision establishes that God's presence is not confined to Jerusalem's Temple but extends even to Babylon. Ezekiel's symbolic actions—lying on his side, shaving his head, digging through walls—dramatize the coming siege.

The restoration visions are among the most extraordinary in Scripture: the valley of dry bones brought to life (chapter 37), the defeat of Gog and Magog (38-39), and the detailed blueprint for a new Temple with the glory of God returning (40-48). These visions sustained exilic hope and continue to inspire eschatological expectation.

Historical Background

Ezekiel son of Buzi was a priest who was among the exiles taken to Babylon in 597 BC. He received his prophetic call in 593 BC and ministered among the exiles by the river Chebar for at least twenty-two years.

The setting is Babylonian exile, with visions addressing both the fall of Jerusalem (which Ezekiel prophesied from afar) and the future restoration. The original audience was the exilic community struggling with questions of God's presence and purpose.

Ezekiel is the third of the Major Prophets in the Christian canon. In the Hebrew Bible, it belongs to the Latter Prophets. The book's priestly perspective and visionary character set it apart from the other major prophetic works.

Devotional

Ezekiel's opening vision shatters every domesticated image of God. The throne above the firmament, the living creatures, the wheels full of eyes—this is the God who transcends every category, whose glory cannot be contained by any temple or tradition. Before this vision, Ezekiel fell on his face. It is the only appropriate response.

The valley of dry bones speaks to every situation that appears beyond hope. Can these bones live? God asked the prophet. Ezekiel's honest answer—Thou knowest—is the prayer of faith when sight offers no encouragement. And the breath of God came, and the bones lived. What is impossible with man is possible with God.

Ezekiel's vision of God's glory departing the Temple is one of the most sobering passages in Scripture. The presence that Israel had taken for granted slowly, reluctantly withdrew—pausing at the threshold, lingering at the east gate, as if unwilling to leave. God's patience has limits, though His love does not.

Yet the book's final vision shows the glory returning to a restored Temple, and its closing words name the city: The LORD is there. This is the Bible's ultimate promise—not merely restored institutions but restored presence. God with His people, forever.
