Where Does This Phrase Come From?
Isaiah prophesied a time when the watchmen of Jerusalem would see clearly and agree — literally seeing "eye to eye." In the KJV the phrase meant seeing something face-to-face or directly; in modern English it shifted to mean agreeing with someone.
The phrase appears in Isaiah 52:8 in the King James Version of the Bible, first published in 1611.
