Paul urged believers not to create spiritual obstacles for each other. The KJV's "stumbling block" — something you trip over in your path — became the standard English metaphor for any impediment to progress, spiritual or otherwise.
The phrase appears in Romans 14:13 in the King James Version of the Bible, first published in 1611.
