Leviticus

Old Testament

Overview

Leviticus stands at the center of the Pentateuch as a manual of holiness, providing detailed instructions for Israel's worship, priesthood, and daily conduct before a holy God. Its twenty-seven chapters address the sacrificial system, priestly ordination, laws of purity, the Day of Atonement, and the Holiness Code.

The five major offerings (burnt, grain, peace, sin, and trespass) occupy the opening chapters, each revealing a different aspect of approach to God. The ordination of Aaron and his sons establishes the Levitical priesthood, while the laws of clean and unclean govern every dimension of Israelite life.

The Day of Atonement (chapter 16) forms the theological heart of the book, presenting the annual cleansing of the nation's sins through blood sacrifice. The Holiness Code (chapters 17-26) grounds ethical conduct in God's own character: Be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

Historical Background

Leviticus is attributed to Moses and records the instructions God gave him at Mount Sinai, primarily from within the newly erected Tabernacle. The book's Hebrew title, Vayyiqra (And He called), reflects its opening words.

The historical setting is the period at Sinai between the completion of the Tabernacle (Exodus 40) and Israel's departure toward Canaan (Numbers 10). The book addresses the Levitical priests and the broader Israelite community.

As the third book of the Pentateuch, Leviticus occupies a central position in the Torah, reflecting its central theological concern: the holiness of God and the means by which His people may approach Him and maintain fellowship.

Devotional

Leviticus may seem remote to the modern reader, yet its central message could not be more urgent: how shall sinful creatures draw near to a holy God? This is the question every human heart must answer, and Leviticus reveals that the answer lies not in human effort but in divinely appointed sacrifice.

The repeated shedding of blood throughout these chapters impresses upon the conscience the terrible gravity of sin. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission. Every slain lamb, every sprinkled altar, every rising column of smoke testified to the costliness of reconciliation.

Yet these sacrifices were shadows, not the substance. The blood of bulls and goats could never finally take away sin. They pointed forward to the Lamb of God who would offer Himself once for all—the perfect priest presenting the perfect sacrifice.

The call to holiness remains unchanged. God still summons His people to be set apart, not by ceremonial observance but by hearts transformed through the Spirit, reflecting His character in every sphere of life.
