Overview
Joshua records the fulfillment of God's promise to give Israel the land of Canaan, narrating the conquest, division, and settlement under Joshua's leadership. The book's twenty-four chapters divide into three major sections: the conquest of the land (chapters 1-12), the division of the land among the tribes (chapters 13-21), and Joshua's farewell addresses (chapters 22-24).
The dramatic crossing of the Jordan, the fall of Jericho, and the campaigns against the southern and northern coalitions demonstrate God's sovereign power in fulfilling His covenant promises. The detailed tribal allotments underscore that every family received its inheritance by divine appointment.
Joshua's closing challenge—Choose you this day whom ye will serve—frames the book's central theological concern: the people's response to God's faithfulness. The book stands as a testimony that not one word of God's promises had failed.
Historical Background
Joshua is traditionally attributed to Joshua himself, with possible later editorial additions, composed in the early fourteenth century BC. The book bears his name as both author and central human figure.
The historical setting spans from the death of Moses to the death of Joshua, covering approximately twenty-five years of conquest and settlement in Canaan (c. 1406-1380 BC). The original audience was Israel in their newly acquired homeland.
As the first book of the Former Prophets in the Hebrew canon, Joshua bridges the Pentateuch and the historical books, demonstrating the fulfillment of promises made to Abraham, Moses, and the patriarchs.
Devotional
The book of Joshua opens with a divine commission that speaks across the centuries: Be strong and of a good courage. Three times God repeated this charge, not because Joshua was naturally timid, but because the task ahead demanded supernatural fortitude rooted in divine promise.
The crossing of the Jordan mirrors the Red Sea crossing, reminding Israel—and us—that the God who begins deliverance also completes it. The same power that brings us out of bondage brings us into inheritance. There is no gap in God's faithfulness.
Jericho's walls fell not by military strategy but by obedient faith. God's methods often confound human wisdom—marching, trumpets, and silence are not the stuff of siege warfare. Yet when God commands, obedience is the only rational response, however foolish it may appear to the world.
Joshua's final exhortation to choose whom to serve reminds us that covenant faithfulness requires daily, deliberate commitment. Grace is free, but discipleship demands the continual surrender of the will to God's purposes.
