Isaiah

Old Testament

Overview

Isaiah is the greatest of the prophetic books, spanning sixty-six chapters that address judgment, comfort, and the coming Messiah with unparalleled literary power and theological depth. The book divides broadly into two major sections: chapters 1-39 emphasizing judgment and chapters 40-66 proclaiming comfort and restoration.

The first section addresses Judah and the surrounding nations, warning of divine judgment against idolatry and injustice while preserving the hope of a righteous remnant. The second section, beginning with Comfort ye my people, envisions Israel's restoration from exile, the coming Servant of the Lord, and the ultimate renewal of all creation.

The four Servant Songs (42:1-9; 49:1-7; 50:4-9; 52:13-53:12) provide the most detailed Old Testament portrait of the Messiah's suffering and triumph. Isaiah's vision encompasses both advents of Christ—His humiliation and His glory—making it the most extensively quoted prophetic book in the New Testament.

Historical Background

Isaiah son of Amoz prophesied in Jerusalem during the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, approximately 740-680 BC. He had access to the royal court and addressed both kings and commoners with equal authority.

The historical setting encompasses the Assyrian crisis, the fall of the northern kingdom, and the siege of Jerusalem under Sennacherib. The later chapters address the future Babylonian exile and restoration beyond it.

Isaiah heads the Major Prophets in both the Hebrew and Christian canons. Its sixty-six chapter structure has been noted as paralleling the sixty-six books of the Bible: thirty-nine chapters of judgment followed by twenty-seven of comfort and redemption.

Devotional

Isaiah opens with a devastating indictment: the ox knows its owner, but Israel does not know its God. The prophet exposes the scandal of a people who offer elaborate worship while their hands are full of blood. God is not impressed by religious performance that masks unrepentant hearts.

Yet Isaiah is supremely the prophet of comfort. Comfort ye, comfort ye my people breaks into the narrative like dawn after a long night. The same God who judges sin yearns to heal, restore, and redeem. His judgments are never His final word.

The Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53 stands as the most astonishing prophecy in the Old Testament. Written seven centuries before Christ, it describes with surgical precision the substitutionary atonement of the cross: He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities. Every line bleeds with the cost of redemption.

Isaiah's closing vision of new heavens and a new earth reminds us that God's redemptive purposes encompass not just souls but all of creation. The groaning creation awaits its liberation, and the prophet assures us that the God who began this work will bring it to glorious completion.
